5 Common Mistakes students make while choosing College

1. Proximity to Hometown

This has cost a lot many, a lot much. In today’s Global era, there is no such thing as proximity. Students think that they will be near to parents. Hence end up chossing wrong college. After 3-4 years of college, job will for sure take you different places. Choose the college that best suits your plans in life, not your plans to travel.

2. My relative said so

This is a common mistake. We call is wrong counselling. Students end up taking the word of a close relative and choose the wrong college. Don’t follow what they say blindly. Take suggestions, make enquiry. Reach an informed decision and not just play blind.

3. Topper Syndrome

All the toppers are taking a particular stream. I should also choose the same. One size fits all is never a good option. Think what you want to do in life. What you want to become. Will you be able to cope up with a particular stream of studies? You should not fall for the Topper Syndrome.

4. He/She is also joining there

Believe me I have seen a lot of youngsters falling into this trap. They join the same college which their boyfriend/girlfriend (or mere infatuation sometimes) us choosing. Such students more often than not end up destroying their lives. Since they didn't choose the college out of merit, studies take a back seat. Secondly school romances rarely materialize. Boy/Girl end up hooking with someone else in college, and you are left to burn daily of angst. Never choose college from heart, apply the brain please.

5. It pays well

This is a dreadful thing to do to you. You choose a college/stream for it is currently fetching handsome salaries. You don’t choose what you like. This creates a lot of complexity. You have to like what you are studying or what you are doing. If you don’t like it, life ends up miserable. You can earn in any field if you got talent and will. But choosing a college just for the sake of money is bound to give a prolonged miserable life.

IIM Odisha racing against time to start admission from 2015 itself

IIM Odisha is racing against time to start admissions from this year itself. A team has been been constituted by Central Government to finalize temporary site for the college.

Once the site is finalized, the admissions process can start. Session start date for IIM Indore, which is helping with IIM Odisha is June 26, by which the site, if finalized, will be able to start admissions. This comes as a good news for IIM aspirants.

The date of 26th June might be tweaked if everything falls in place for IIM Odisha. The four member team is led by Praveen Kumar, joint secreatary MHRD. Given the push from ministry level, Odisha might have it's own IIM sooner than anticipated.

UPSC: Use of Scribes allowed in Exam for Blind and other Disable Students

Representative image
In a long due course correction, candidates appearing Civil Services Exam and suffering from Blindness, Cerebral Palsy and Locomotor disability have been allowed to you scribes.

According to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), these candidates will get extra 20 mins per hour to write the exam to compensate for disability. This has been hailed by educationalists and students alike, as a historic gesture.

Cerebral Palsy effects movement of body, while locomotor disability effects joints and muscles. Both hinders writing capacity. For 3 hours paper, 60 mins will be the grace time along with the use of scribe from 2015 onwards.

Didn’t clear IIT JEE: Don’t worry, its IIT’s loss, not yours!

Not a big deal anymore!
IIT JEE (Advanced) 2015 results are out. Few dreams fulfilled. A lot of heartbreaks. If you couldn’t clear JEE, don’t worry, its IIT’s loss, not yours. No need brooding over it. Today’s India is far more different that India of 15 years ago. Opportunities are far more than a decade ago.

The hoopla of IIT’s has taken a toll on generations after generations. Lack of opportunities in India, coupled with IT boom and Y2k bug around the years 2000, resulted in a mad rush to IIT’s. Just like becoming an IAS started meant lots of power and black money, IIT’s started became synonymous with US visa. If you need to get out of India, clear JEE. Rampant corruption, crippling infrastructure, lack of jobs, lower wages all came together to the point of feeling, “To Hell with India” and “India ka kuch nahin ho sakta”.

That Indians working abroad, don’t like to admit it, is not a sign of their arrogance and hypocrisy. It’s coz they still have soft corner about their birth country. They fled not because they are bad, they fled due to circumstances.

As of today, a lot of such IT workers have come back to India. Lots of them have lost their jobs in US/UK, due to recession and global uprising against out sourcing.  Pay scales have increased 10 fold in India since the year 2000. Today if you are bright, you get a plum job and can live a lavish life in any metro city in India. It’s easy for both husband and wife to get a job in the same city in India. Abroad it’s very difficult. So one of the two ends up working.

What I am trying to get at is, if you don’t clear JEE, don’t worry. Handsome opportunities beckons. Stay focused and be confident. That’s all I ask of you.
